About our cause
Veterans & Family-Listening Project (VF-LP) is an informal group that brings together veterans & families of all ages and circumstance, that have served in the British Armed Forces.
The group is well established, popular and also well attended, running for the morning on the second Tuesday of each month throughout the year. The VF-LP seeks to support veterans & families of all ages, with regular talks from both local and national charities who can offer information and support to veterans and their families or carers.
The VF-LP holds a regular Veterans’ Wellbeing and Reminiscence Group’ that has been developed so that the specific needs of Veterans can be accommodated. The challenges of having a combination of physical and emotional health challenges is apparent in talking to veterans. Senior Veterans’ often describe a sense of loss as fellow veterans that have passed away as well as experiencing a loss of ‘connection’ with the younger veterans whose combat experiences may differ significantly to theirs.
In addition, there is often the potentially negative experience of cognitive and physical decline, this maybe through a process such as dementia or may be the result of mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs) sustained many years ago; have persistent, and sometimes progressive, long-term debilitating effects.
This creates a unique set of concerns for the veterans across the ages, and requires a distinct aim for the group in order to address these challenges. One of the most recent groups as allowed for a period of reminiscence of experiences, reflections on combat but also on changes in how the Forces operate.
This allows veterans to spend time reflecting on their past career, but importantly to experience the camaraderie of the group. The group bonding and sharing is significant for all veterans, but more so for those the elders that have lost peers or even loved ones with whom they may have discussed the past. The shared knowledge and experience of military life in the group can allow elder veterans to feel comfortable & safe to discuss topics that they may not get to talk about and once again feel of value.
We would also like to offer targeted reminiscence for veterans using sources such as visiting museums where sources could be touched and talked about in the safety of the group. In our experience these activities have the potential to facilitate open conversations to allow older veterans to remember and share experiences.
